Top 10 CV Tips For A Digital Marketer
We receive hundreds of CV’s from people who are either looking to start their journey in Digital Marketing or those who are already on the career ladder. But sadly, a lot of the CV’s we receive are immediately discounted because they don’t demonstrate the applicant’s enthusiasm or experience to let us know why we should employ them. Your CV is your first opportunity to grab the reader’s attention straight away and draw them in. As a Digital Marketer, you need to be able to market and sell yourselves! Who knows more about you than you?
We’ve put together our 10 top tips for creating the best CV that will get help you past the first hurdle and get your foot in the door.
1. Check, Check, And Check Again
It shouldn’t have to be said and shockingly it’s still the number one issue… Spell check and proof read your CV. There is nothing worse than boasting you have excellent attention to detail and then sending out a poorly written document, full of spelling errors, typos and poor grammar. It can sometimes help to ask a friend or family member to proof read it for you as they can spot small mistakes that you might have missed.
2. Adapt
Every CV should be tailored to the prospective role while being factual and honest. There is nothing more off putting than receiving a CV that’s written as a one size fits all and prospective employers will be able to see this from a mile off. Take the time to modify each CV and covering letter to the role you are applying for. This small change can make a huge difference.
3. Pay Attention
Pay attention to what the recruiter is asking you to do when applying for a role. Read through the job specification thoroughly. Answer any application questions, remember to attach your CV, include a covering letter within the email and use the contact address supplied. Don’t go rogue on this and you’re already on the right track.
4. Tell Us
Never assume a prospective employer will know what a current or past employer does as a business. Including a 1 sentence synopsis of what each company does will help prospective employers understand the role you had there.
5. Achievements
Recognise and shout out about your achievements. Whether that’s creating and implementing new company processes; being short listed for industry awards; leading workshops or chairing the social committee. Prospective employers want to know this information to get a better understanding of who you are.
6. Results
For Digital Marketing roles, detailing results of successful campaigns (increase in clicks, new clients, % YOY increase in sales) will demonstrate the value that you can bring to the team.
7. Negativity
NO negativity. Being negative about your current or former employer(s) or colleague(s) creates a bad impression. Leave your bad experiences at the door.
8. Explain
Always include a reason for leaving each role, making sure you use positive phrasing. This doesn’t need to be more than a sentence. Careers gaps also need to be well explained.
9. Social Sense
Social media is one of the easiest ways an employer can find out more about you. Setting your Facebook, Instagram etc. profiles to private and keeping these for friends and family is good practice. LinkedIn, Twitter and professional social platforms, should be reflective of your professional persona and up to date with your work history.
10. Layout
You need to catch the recruiters eye and draw them in, hold their interest and be memorable for all the right reasons. As such your CV layout is important; using uncluttered easy to read professional fonts (not comic sans!), utilising bold formatting to highlight key points, along with clear and concise content will help to get you noticed.
I hope that our top 10 tips help you to create an amazing CV and I’m looking forward to the next influx we have with a hint of excitement rather than trepidation.
